Four-month appointment recap

Friday, Sept. 25 was our four-month appointment — and it was probably the least interesting one so far. No fancy ultrasounds and not much news to report, other than the heartbeat is going strong in the upper 140s and we added one pound since last month. Both Mom and Dad got their flu shots, not to be confused with the H1N1 flu shots, which it seems like we may have trouble getting.

One of the best things so far

is this timing.

Stocking up

Yes, we knew they were expensive. Everybody warns you. But I don’t think we knew just how expensive until we started looking at actual costs of everything from the daily stuff to the monthly stuff to the oh-my-god-how-does-anyone-afford-college stuff?

A very small idea I read on another blog is one we’re trying out — buy one package of diapers, in varying sizes and using whatever coupons apply, on regular shopping trips throughout pregnancy. The diapers that had been stockpiled lasted the blogger a year — and was one less thing on the weekly/monthly expense tab.

Football openers

I’m pleased to report opening week was good — barely — for both teams in our house. But let’s be honest — we know which onesie is going to get the most wear! (Thanks, Adam & Karen!)

Things I love to eat

Far and away, when we share the news the most frequently-asked-question behind “How are you feeling?,” is “Are there certain things you like to eat?”

Yes. Unfortunately, the list is pretty similar to the things I’ve always liked too eat — but try not to eat ALL OF THE TIME. That’s a little harder to do right now, but at least feeling better has made it easier for me to make it to the gym often enough for a little uptick in:

  • Macaroni & cheese
  • French onion dip & chips
  • Macaroni & cheese
  • Dairy Queen blizzards
  • Macaroni & cheese
  • Stuffed baked potato skins
  • Macaroni & cheese
  • (Quiero) Taco Bell

You get the idea. While the regular box version usually does the trick, here’s my favorite home-made version I’ll be making next time, courtesy of Aunt Sherie. Yum.

Macaroni & Cheese

  • 2 cups whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 8 oz dried radiatore or rigatoni pasta
  • 1 3-ounce pkg cream cheese cut up and softened
  • Freshly grated Parmesan

In saucepan combine whipping cream, rosemary, salt and black pepper. Bring to boiling; reduce heat.  Boil gently, uncovered, for 25 to 30 minutes  or until mixture is reduced to 1-1/3 cups, stirring occasionally.  Cook pasta according to pkg.  Drain and keep warm.  Stir cooked pasta, and cheese, into cream mixture.  Cook and stir 2 minutes until heated through.  Serve immediately.  Sprinkle with fresh grated Parm, if desired.  Makes 4 servings.

Strange new furniture

Riley wasn’t quite sure of what to do with this, and neither are we. I found this brand-new bassinet  for sale on the neighborhood email list and couldn’t pass up a good deal. Maybe we’ll all be used to it by March — six months from today.

Easily expandable

A new winter wardrobe … a solid start, but the finds for wearable work clothes are pretty slim!
