Where the Anders Comes In

Eleanor’s middle name is Ann — after her maternal grandmother’s middle name. Finley’s middle name is Anders — after her paternal grandmother’s middle name … and her uncle … and a long line of Anders’. Grandma Mary gave us the rundown (unabridged below!):

Here’s how it goes, starting with the youngest and going back in time:

Finley Anders Kaye, b. 5-22-2013
Anders Jacob Kaye (uncle)
Mary Anders Mortenson Kaye (grandma)
skipped generation
Anders Nils Mortenson (Finley’s great great grandfather from Sweden)
–and now the strange Scandanavian way of naming starts–
Morten Anderson (great great great grandfather in Sweden)
Anders Mortenson (great great great great grandfather in Sweden)
Morten Andersson (great great great great great grandfather in Sweden, using the old spelling)
Anders Mortensson (great great great great great great grandfather in Sweden, using the old spelling)

and so it goes, probably back to the beginning of scandinavia!!!

To make matters even more confusing, sometimes names were spelled ending in -sen  (like Viggo Mortensen, who may be some degree of distant cousin) instead of -son.

This entire scene, including even more Anderses, also takes place in Norway, Denmark and Iceland (they all used to be one big tribe.)

(In Iceland they still use the old naming system, adding “dottir” and well as “son” or “sen.” Finley would be “Finley Ansonsdottir” or “Melaniesdottir” depending on whether the parents are married or not, which is considered optional in Iceland. Try figuring out the telephone book of Reykevik Iceland for fun some time.)

Love,
Grandma Mary
